Edpuzzle activity about the passive voice

https://edpuzzle.com/media/67d1dc70eff936f7139093b4

I liked the Edpuzzle activity carried out by teacher Sandra Hernández about families. I´ve decided to use the same tool to work on the passive voice with my 3rd year of CSE group.

Stage 1

I select  a ready -made passive voice video. Then, I project the video in whole-class live mode. Students answer embedded questions.

Stage 2

Later, I pause strategically at natural breaks to ask verbal questions: "Raise hands if this sentence is passive: 'The test was taken by students'".

Stage 3

I ask students to write conversions on their notebooks.

After the video ends, I will use a think-pair-share activity:

1.   Think: Students write 2 passive sentences about classroom objects ("The markers were placed here")

2.      Pair: Exchange sentences with a partner to identify the agent

3.      Share: Volunteers write examples on the board

Why this works:

  • Zero Prep: Uses existing videos with no editing time
  • Formative Checks: verbal responses show understanding

Tip: We can bookmark 2 or 3 passive voice videos in our Edpuzzle account for instant access during lessons.

PROJECT ON FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS

https://view.genially.com/67e70e1b81d7c06155cd9550/presentation-festivals-and-celebrations

Stage 1

Introduction of the task. I tell my students about their freedom to choose a famous festival or celebration either in Spain or in another  part of the world. Once they have chosen it, they should look for specific information which is detailed in my presentation. They can work in pairs or individually.

Stage 2

After gathering the information, they should use a presentation tool: Genially, Canva, Powerpoint, Google Slides, Genially, etc. It can include photos and audios. The presentation should be sent to my email to check it before the presentation day.

Stage 3

After one week of work and investigation, they will have to give a speech / make an oral presentation about the project they have made. In case of pairwork, every student will have to talk about a part of the project.

Stage 4

Presentation and oral speech: students will introduce their presentation on the digital whiteboard in front of their classmates. Reading the presentation is forbidden.

Finally, every student will get two marks corresponding to written work and oral speech. Special attention will be paid to punctuation, word order, grammar, spelling as well as body language, pitch, rhythm and intonation.

Regarding the use of ICT tools to work on projects, my students already knew how to use several of them, so they didn´t have any problem.

Pixton: "The Moon Landing - One Small Step"

For this project, students will have to create a comic strip about a historical event. The objective is to discover their knowledge about history by retelling the event in a creative and engaging way.

Organizing Groups:

  1. Group Size:
    • Small groups of 3-4 students work best to ensure everyone participates actively.
  2. Group Composition:
    • Mix students with different strengths (e.g., one strong researcher, one creative thinker, one tech-savvy student, and one good writer).
    • This ensures a balanced distribution of skills and responsibilities.
  3. Roles Within Groups:
Assign specific roles to each student to ensure accountability:
    • Researcher: Gathers historical facts and details.
    • Storyboarder: Plans the comic layout and sequence.
    • Artist/Designer: Creates the visuals using Pixton.
    • Editor/Writer: Writes dialogue and ensures historical accuracy.

Sequence of Tasks:

  1. Introduction to Pixton (15-20 minutes):
    • Provide a brief tutorial on how to use Pixton (creating characters, adding backgrounds, writing dialogue, etc.).
    • Show an example comic to inspire students.
  2. Research the Historical Event (20-30 minutes):
    • Students work in their groups to research the event using textbooks, online resources, or library materials.
    • They should identify key figures, dates, and significant moments.
  3. Plan the Comic (20-30 minutes):
    • Groups create a storyboard outlining the sequence of events.
    • Decide on the number of panels, characters, and dialogue.
  4. Create the Comic on Pixton (45-60 minutes):
    • Students use Pixton to bring their storyboard to life.
    • They add characters, backgrounds, and dialogue, ensuring historical accuracy.
  5. Review and Edit (15-20 minutes):
    • Groups review their comics for accuracy, creativity, and clarity.
    • Make final adjustments based on feedback from peers or the teacher.
  6. Present and Share (30-40 minutes):
    • Each group presents their comic to the class, explaining the historical event and their creative choices.
    • Encourage questions and discussions.

Specific Learning Objectives:

  1. Historical Understanding:
    • Students will demonstrate knowledge of a historical event by accurately depicting key details in their comic.
  2. Critical Thinking:
    • Students will analyze the significance of the event and decide which moments to highlight in their comic.
  3. Creativity and Storytelling:
    • Students will use creative storytelling techniques to make the historical event engaging and accessible.
  4. Collaboration:
    • Students will work effectively in groups, dividing tasks and communicating to achieve a shared goal.
  5. Digital Literacy:
    • Students will develop skills in using Pixton as a digital tool for creating visual content.

How Pixton Helps Achieve These Objectives:

  1. Engagement:
    • Pixton’s interactive and visual nature makes learning about history fun and engaging, especially for visual and kinesthetic learners.
  2. Creativity:
    • The tool allows students to express their understanding of the event in a creative way, making abstract historical concepts more concrete.
  3. Collaboration:
    • Pixton’s collaborative features (if available) enable students to work together in real-time, fostering teamwork and communication.
  4. Digital Skills:
    • Students gain experience using a digital tool, which enhances their technical skills and prepares them for future projects.
  5. Visual Learning:
    • Creating a comic helps students visualize historical events, making it easier to remember key details and understand cause-and-effect relationships.

By organizing groups effectively, following a clear sequence of tasks, and aligning the activity with specific learning objectives, this Pixton activity becomes a powerful tool for teaching history while fostering creativity, collaboration, and digital literacy.

Creativity and the use of imagination were encouraged in my students by combining creativity, research, and storytelling, making history come alive in a fun and memorable way!

  • What my students didn´t really enjoy was the fact that they had to manage Pixton and also that it was a high time consuming activity. As for the finished projects, they were shown in class. Students  co-evaluated and discussed the learning experience with each other by exchanging comics and providing feedback on historical accuracy and creativity.

Saint Patrick

https://edpuzzle.com/media/67d5a93a04eb4cd6e6650916

Why I chose this video

I´ve chosen this video because next Monday is Saint Patrick´s day and I consider it a good chance to learn about Irish symbols, traditions and celebrations.

Learning objectives for the session(s) and sequence of activities:

·     To catch students attention as far as Irish traditions and culture are concerned

·  To practice listening skills, focusing on both understanding the small details (Bottom-up listening) and getting the big picture (Top-down listening).

·    To make students think over the relevance of symbols and its meaning as well as their relation to present day customs.

Sequence of activities

I started with a quick chat about Ireland and what they knew about the Emerald island. Then, I explained how to access the activity at home so that my students had no problems and completed it successfully. I flipped my class by asking them to make the activity at home. This exercise provided speaking material to be worked in class the next day.

Everything went well and my students really enjoyed the activity. They liked it so much that I decided to upload another video to be worked in class. Finally, they watched the video and summarized the main ideas in groups.

Twentieth century British music timeline with Timetoast

https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/british-music

Learning Objectives of the Activity

  • Enhance students’ ability to summarize key historical British music bands by organizing them into a structured timeline.
  • Develop collaborative skills through group work, encouraging discussion and shared responsibilities.
  • Improve digital literacy by introducing students to Timetoast, a tool that allows them to visualize information in an interactive way.
  • Clear chronological structure
  • Engaging and interactive activity
  • Encourages collaboration
  1. I introduced the concept of timelines and demonstrated how to use Timetoast, highlighting its key features.
  1. Students were divided into small groups (3 members per group)
  1. Each group had a text on a specific band
  1. Groups identified key dates and events ensuring they selected the most relevant information.
  1. Groups entered their information into Timetoast
  1. Each group presented their timeline
  1. Students reflected on their work, discussing what they learned and what they could improve.
  • Some groups tried to include too many details, making the timeline look messy. I guided them by giving them examples.
  • Some groups needed more time to complete their work so they had to finish the task at home.
  • Some groups where really creative and wanted to add videos.
  • Give more time for peer feedback so students can make sure their work is good before presenting it.
  1. Students had to organize information logically.
  1. They  actively created and explored content in a visual way.
  1. Group work required dividing tasks and ended up in organizing themselves.
